Nubian Vault

Learning by doing Workshop

The brief of this workshop was to build a vault using an old technique of building which was used in the southern part of Egypt and Sudan. The process starts by drawing the arch using a chain and gravity. After gravity shapes the chain, the arch is reversed and drawn on a wall since this technique requires a structure to hold the pressure and stabilize it. The materials used were bricks and mortar. We were taught how to cut bricks using a hammer. We mixed mortar with water and made the “brick glue”. After a thorough tutorial from experts, we started building it brick by brick. We stacked them together in an angle ,following the drawn curve. It was built simultaneously in height and length. The process took 5 days to finish. It was an incredible opportunity to work with bricks as a material since it’s a very common construction material. It was a team project that proved the importance of division of tasks among us. Moment after moment, the structure grew.

First steps

A chain is hung up and then gravity will define the curve of the vault using gravity. The curve is going to be traced inverted to create the vault line.

Bricks are prepared

Bricks are “glued” together with mortar

Once it dries they come on top of each other
